SYNOPSIS:
“Red Poet” is a biographical film of San Francisco Poet Laureate, Jack Hirschman. For five years, filmmaker Matthew Furey followed the Poet to cafes and art galleries, to bookstore poetry readings in Los Angeles and Venice, Italy. The result is a skilful weave of the person and the place, the past and the present told through the voice of a North Beach poet,
who represents a special American tradition – an America of its progressive cultural past, of poets such as Walt Whitman and Woody Guthrie – now in danger of being lost to history.

BIOGRAPHY:
Matthew Furey holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from San Francisco State University. He wrote and directed ‘The Hard Road of Rico Star” a 50 minute narrative film which premiered in San Francisco in 2000. He began “Red Poet in 2003. The 55 minutes documentary - his first - was completed in July 2010. Born and raised in San Francisco, he is currently working on development of a documentary project on the Los Angeles and San Francisco Beat Scene in the 1950’s. He thinks that: “the times demand radical documentary film making of all kinds”.
