The Wicked Uncle (Il Cattivo Zio)

A village in the woods. Everybody knows everybody else; everybody knows everything about the others. The town is far away. The locals are all by themselves. Trix Brunner, a single mother who moved to the village years ago, accuses a PE teacher of sexually molesting her daughter. The whole village is outraged at the mother for making such a claim. After all, the accused is a former national champion. In the 70s, the now elderly PE teacher Armin was a national champion in high diving’one of the few great moments in the village’s history. Armin’s trophies in the local bar’s display case are like a shrine to the villagers. Newcomers are tolerated as long as they are discrete and keep out of other people’s business. Otherwise, they are scorned, like feisty Trix Brunner. Punishment is isolation, and anyone who knows about life in small villages knows that this form of retribution is much worse than it is in the city. But Trix Brunner hasn’t cut off all contacts to the city.

In 2003, on the eve of the Iraq war, director Iara Lee embarked on a journey in a world increasingly embroiled in conflict; Iara encountered many people struggling to promote change. From Burma, where non-violent monks take on a dictatorship, to Brazil, where musicians turn guns into guitars, and ending in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, where photography, music and film have given a voice to the speechless, the movie celebrates people standing up to violence with art and creative activism.

Combat Girls (Kriegerin)

Marisa, a 20-year-old German girl, hates foreigners, Jews, cops, and everyone she finds guilty for the decline of her country. She provokes, drinks, fights, and her next tattoo will be a portrait of Adolf Hitler. The only place she feels home is the Neo-Nazi gang she belongs to, where hate, violence, and heavy parties are the daily rules. When 14-year-old Svenja joins the group, Marisa appears like a role model to her: she fits the purest idea of a combat girl fighting for the group’s ideology. But Marisa’s convictions will slowly evolve when she accidentally meets a young Afghan refugee. Confronted with him, she will learn that the black and white principles of her gang are not the only way. Will Marisa ever be able to get out of this group?

Much Better Now

The main character is a bookmark, stuck in a forgotten book in a deserted room. One day a window opens, knocking over the book and blowing the bookmark onto the table. While the bookmark watches from a distance, the wind catches the pages, turning them into ocean waves. The character is given the opportunity to experience its environment in a new way.
