Among today’s screenings attached to this section are The Broken Moon from Marcos Negrão & André Rangel, which tells the story of nomadic tribes in the Himilayas and the faith and sacrifice of a population suffering from the consequences of climate change and human development – a desperate search for answers that will change their destiny. The festival continues with Red Dust by Karin T. Mak about the damage caused by cadmium in Chinese battery factories. If not treated, cadmium poisoning can lead to renal failure, cancer and death. The film eviscerates a hidden side of China’s developing economy and highlights the resistance and courage of the workers who fight illnesses and demand justice from local governments and global businesses. Friday’s final documentary is Loro della Munnizza from directors Marco Battaglia, Gianluca Donati, Laura Schimmenti and Andrea Zulini. The film tells the tormented history of the “cenciaioli” of Palermo, professional recyclers who, for generations, have descended upon the city in their Apecars to collect the “munnizza” refuse for reuse and resale. This recycling has, for years, provided work for more than 400 families and a valuable ecological service for the citizens. Today, however, despite the tragic waste emergency, the government no longer allows them to continue their activities.
