Czechoslovakia, the gray 1980s. Teenage Anna is a top sprinter and her trainer thinks she can go all the way to the Olympics. Her mother is also pinning her hopes on Annas success, seeing it as an opportunity for her daughter to live in the free world beyond the Iron Curtain. This vision is so strong that she willingly supports the doping program the communist regime is testing on her daughter although her health will clearly suffer. Unfolding gradually, Fair Play may be a tale of fiction but it shines a light on historically-based demands made by the regime, and when they concerned a loved one it was difficult to ignore them. In addition to her powerful, unromanticized evocation of the era that avoids becoming an ostentatious stream of period props, the director succeeds in putting forward a universal story of adolescent fragility without resorting to melodrama. Although ostensibly about sports, this film presents a depiction of relationships and their complications.

Those who escaped the wrath of the Gods are not spared from the anxiety of research: Brutus at night, Julia at day, fragile and tenacious, reveals in front of the mirror that she does not know where this journey will take. Why is there so much hate through the centuries, so much annoyance and disgust toward homosexuality? Where does this attitude come from? This is a question asked to people who killed gay people or who are leaders of movements opposing the rights for homosexuals, to people who have been discriminated for their sexual orientation or who have seen their children to commit suicide for this reason.

Nineteen-year-old Basset is the goalkeeper for the Syrian national soccer team. When revolution breaks out the charismatic young man becomes an iconic protest leader and singer. His songs reflect his dream of peaceful liberation from Assad’s brutal regime. Osama is a 24-year-old media activist and pacifist wielding his camera to document the revolution. But when the army cracks down and their beloved Homs becomes a bombed-out ghost town, these two peaceful protesters take up arms and transform into renegade insurgents, with devastating results.
